A Celebration of Architecture: RIBA National Awards 2014

News-RIBA-London-shortlist-2014-536x536The Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) revealed in June the winners of its national awards for architectural excellence.

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios claimed three RIBA National Awards to make them the most successful practice of the past five years, with Wilkinson Eyre, Allies and Morrison and Hopkins each claiming two awards.

With 17 projects in London over a third of the National Awards were won by buildings in the capital. There was also strong showings for the South West, where there were six winners, and the South & South East with seven. There were no RIBA National Award given in Wales, the North East and East Midlands.

The Stirling Prize has awarded the new Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. It feels like a found space. It draws on the themes and ideas of Haworth Tomkins’ previous theatre work at Royal Court and Young Vic. Here all is a new-build, yet it has the ambience of an old building, in part down to the use of recycled and exposed brick in the major areas of auditorium, bars and circulation. This is a building that breathes quality in its choice of materials, in its lighting and its signage.
